Curatorial Statement

The Invisible Classroom explores how learning changes when the classroom is no longer a shared physical space. Taking Australia’s School of the Air as a historical starting point, the exhibition examines how radio, distance and communication technologies transformed education into a distributed infrastructure. Teachers became voices, students became listeners and respondents across signals, and the classroom was reorganised through frequency, schedules, devices, mailed materials and domestic participation. Rather than treating distance as a limitation, the project asks how absence itself can become a condition for new forms of collective learning. Extending this history toward contemporary platforms, video communication and AI-based learning, the exhibition considers what happens to attention, participation and community when education increasingly depends on invisible networks.
